Know one of the best places in Cyprus: the village of Tala
Tala is a town that inspires and invites you to live. It is located 8 kilometres from the city of Paphos, in a unique context of trees, vineyards, citrus, olive groves that perfume the different seasons of the year. With a wide range of historical, cultural and social attractions, it has been chosen for years as one of the favourite places of the British living on the island of Cyprus. And not only is it a holiday destination, but Tala is also much more than that.
The island offers countless investment opportunities in the Cyprus real estate market, but few are as attractive as Tala's ones. Without a doubt, a town worth knowing. Moreover, it is located in a magical environment, with a benign climate that invites you to rest and enjoy. It isn't easy to find the exact origin of the town since its foundation is not mentioned in any source.
For now, it is good to know that its name originates from the Frankish domination of the island, from a very wealthy family, the D'Avila. First, historians believe that the name came to Tavila, and then that originated the place name Tala. It is worth remembering that the Kingdom of Cyprus was a Catholic kingdom, where the domination and pre-eminence of the Crusaders were fundamental between 1192 and 1489. At that time, the French House of Lusignan was at the forefront of all events on the island.
Walking the streets of the town of Tala is taking a trip back in time. In the centre of the city, an important medieval monument stands out: the church of Agia Ekaterini, which dates back to the 15th century. It is good to know that very close to the town is the Agios Neofytos Monastery, which somehow functions as the nerve centre of Tala's daily life. The Agios Neofytos monastery museum has invaluable treasures, which can be seen by those who visit it.
This museum is divided into two departments. On the one hand, there is the religious iconography, full of sacred objects, manuscripts, documents and clothing used in other times. All this material is from the 12th to the 19th centuries. The other section of the museum shows different elements belonging to ancient times, more precisely from 600 BC.
Those who wish to visit the town will find a group of archaeological ruins dated to prehistoric times in the southern part. Today, these ruins are confused with many houses, villas, studios and apartments to live in. It is good to know that the Cyprus marketplace is extremely careful about everything related to the island's history. In this context, you will find that an excellent real estate agent will always advise you where you can build and where you can't.
In recent years, the town began to grow, especially from tourism. Thus, there are already many British who have chosen this place to settle. Beautiful houses stand out in the town's streets, among which you can find luxurious properties of excellent taste and high-quality construction. As we find in different architectural treatises, the Church of Santa Catalina is built in the Byzantine style and has a vast central dome.
Inside are figurative paintings and frescoes and details that refer to different periods indicated in the bible. Among the innumerable information, we find that the gospels and the church plate are Russian. Several famous people have their roots in Tala. One of them is singer Cat Stevens.
His father, Stavros Georgiou, was born there in 1900. Furthermore, Tala is the birthplace of Chrysostomos II, who is currently the Archbishop of Cyprus. For now, Tala awaits you to discover some of the best-kept secrets of one of the many and beautiful villages that are close to the city of Paphos.
